Week of 11/2

Happy November! We have a busy month ahead! I'm sure everyone had a great weekend of Fall fun and trick-or-treating! Thanks to all who sent in pumpkins! We estimated, measured, counted, compared, and learned some new things about pumpkins - including how they decompose! Pics coming soon!

We will not be doing word study (spelling) this week. We have to finish testing to wrap up the quarter, so I will not be meeting with word study groups.

IMPORTANT DATES/REMINDERS:
  • Field trip money and permission is due by Friday, 11/6.
  • Book Fair starts Monday. Our class will have a preview day Monday, then they can purchase any day after they finish morning work (8:35 - 9:05), or after they eat their lunch. Grand Lunch is Friday, 11/6.

Here's what we'll be working on this week:

Language Arts:
Reading Strategy: Summarizing (nonfiction)
SkillsSequencing, graphic sources, context clues
GrammarIrregular plurals

WritingDescriptive writing, editing/revising

Math:
We've moved on to money (SOL 3.8). Students will continue to determine the value of a collection of bills and coins ($5.00 and less), compare money amounts, and make change. We'll also be solving money word problems and adding and subtracting with money. There will be a unit test on Thursday. Keep practicing math skills on IXL to review for the CPA. So far, we've done place value, rounding, +/- with regrouping, comparing numbers, estimating, and now money. A review packet will be coming home soon in preparation for the CPA on 11/10.

Science: (with Mrs. King)
Students moving on to habitats (SOL 3.6). Stay tuned to agenda for more information/assessment dates.

Social Studies:
We continuing with our maps unit (SOL 3.5). Students have to be able to identify the seven continents and five oceans. They also have to understand the equator and prime meridian and classify the continents and oceans according to the hemispheres. They had a "retake" continents/oceans quiz to have a chance to improve their grade. I'll record the better of the two grades. =) We'll also be studying grid maps. There will be a geography test on Friday - study guide is coming home Monday.
