Week of 10/19

A couple of reminders/notices for the week:

  • Remember to send in Boxtops - we fell to third place for third grade - let's finish strong!! =)
  • 1:00 dismissal Wednesday - lunch is 30 minutes early, so we'll eat from 10:50-11:20.
  • WEAR ORANGE WEDNESDAY for bullying prevention/awareness
  • We're going to be trying to "Read for the Record" on Thursday. This is a national event that aims to have all children read the same book, Not Norman: A Goldfish Story on this day. Will we break the record this year?
  • We'll have our Pumpkin Day next Friday, October 30th. We need 6 pumpkins for our activities on this day. If you're going pumpkin-picking and would like to donate a pumpkin, we would appreciate it!
  • Our quarterly testing is coming up for reading and math. These tests will be second week in November. Stay tuned for exact dates. Your child can start reviewing skills we've covered by using IN notes and IXL for math.
Here's what we'll be working on this week:

Language Arts:
Reading Strategy: Summarizing (nonfiction)
Skillsmain idea/details, compound words
Grammarpronouns, regular plurals

WritingDescriptive writing, editing/revising

**Please be sure your child brings word study baggies to school each day - we use them in class.

Math:
We've moved on to estimating. There will be a quiz on Friday (SOL 3.4). Keep practicing math skills on IXL - students often have a hard time when subtracting with regrouping. Please encourage your mathematician to check his/her work by working backwards from their answer, using the inverse operation. We'll start our money unit next week! =)

Science: (with Mrs. King)
Students are studying food chains (SOL 3.5) - quiz Friday!

Social Studies:
We have begun our continents and oceans unit (SOL 3.5). Students have to be able to identify the seven continents and five oceans. They also have to understand the equator and prime meridian and classify the continents and oceans according to the hemispheres. There is a continents and oceans quiz on Thursday.
