Week of 10/12

A couple of reminders for the week:

  • Remember to send in Boxtops! =)
  • Deadline for Reflections contest is this Friday 10/16!
  • Pizza Bingo is this Friday!
Here's what we'll be working on this week:

Language Arts:
Reading Strategy: Summarizing
Skillscompare and contrast characters, settings, plot, sequencing, ways to spell long i and long u, suffixes
GrammarSubject/predicate

WritingDescriptive writing, editing/revising

We have started Word Study (spelling) groups.

Typically the weekly homework for this will be:
Monday: sort words (no writing/gluing)
Tuesday: written sort
Wednesday: ABC order
Thursday: Practice test

Students will also be doing Word Work activities with their spelling words in class, and the weekly test will be on Fridays.

Math:
We are going to continue with addition and subtracting and regrouping (SOL 3.4). There will be an addition quiz Tuesday (this is a review from 2nd grade), and a subtraction quiz on Friday. Keep practicing math skills on IXL - students often have a hard time when subtracting with regrouping. Please encourage your mathematician to check his/her work by working backwards from their answer, using the inverse operation. Ask your child to "teach" you how to do this!

Science: (with Mrs. King)
Students are studying food chains (SOL 3.5) - stay tuned to the agenda for upcoming quizzes/tests.

Social Studies:
Since it's Columbus Day Monday, we are going to continue to review Christopher Columbus (started Friday). There will be a Columbus (SOL 3.3) quiz for our class on Wednesday, and for King's class on Thursday. Then we'll move on to our continents/
oceans unit (SOL 3.4).
