Thanks to Keegan's mom for creating the pumpkin organizers for us!
We had to have the gross factor for Friday, so we read a very informative book about how and why pumpkins decompose. This was a great integration with Science. The kids had great background knowledge (schema) about pumpkins, as well as the decomposers in the food chain (thanks, Mrs. King!).
After reading, students had to work together to come up with facts to write on their team's seed(s) to place on our pumpkin organizer.
Thanks to all who donated a pumpkin!! =) We are going to leave a carved pumpkin and an uncarved pumpkin outside to see which one decomposes faster. There will be some great hypothesizing because we learned some awesome facts in the Rotten Pumpkin book!
In between lunch and resource, we did a following directions activity. I read a story called Perky Pumpkin, and students had to follow along, making a "house" for the cat in the story. Little did they know, (until the end when they opened their papers) they were making a jack-o-lantern (if they followed directions)! The looks of surprise were priceless!
Then we scooped and scooped.. students had to estimate the number of lines on the outside of their pumpkins and also the number of seeds inside their pumpkins. They were pretty good "estimaters"!
We used our knowledge of place value to count our seeds. We counted our seeds and put them in groups of 10. Then we "regrouped" the tens into the hundreds cups. No one got over 600 seeds!
We also counted the actual number of lines. Our estimates were close!
