Week of 10/20

Here's a glimpse of what we'll be working on this week:

Language Arts:
Story: Guys From Space

Phonics: Digraph 00 (shook, took)

Strategy: Realism vs. fantasy

Skills:  sequencing, suffixes, irregular plurals, contractions with pronouns

Grammar: Complete and varied sentences/nouns and verbs (continued/ongoing)

Writing: Descriptive writing (continued)

Math:
We've started our money unit (SOL 3.8). Students will be able to determine the value of a collection of bills and coins whose total value is $5.00 or less. We'll also compare sets of money and be able to make change.

Science: (with Mrs. King)
Mrs. King is moving into habitats. She will need 5 shoe boxes, as the children will be creating habitats in a group project at school. She will be requesting items soon - stay tuned.

Social Studies:
We've wrapped up the geography unit, but will continue to review and will revisit once we start our explorers unit in the second quarter. Now we are moving on to American symbols. The children will be learning about our flag, Statue of Liberty, the bald eagle, and the Washington Monument. There will be a quiz on Friday.

Important dates/reminders:
  • Read for the Record Day is Tuesday. This year's book is Bunny Cakes - students can dress up as a bunny or a chef.
  • Keep those Boxtops coming in - contest ends 10/28.
  • Pumpkin Day is 10/31. This day is also a 2:20 dismissal.
  • Checkpoint Assessment (CPA) dates:
    • November 4th and 5th - Math
    • November 11th and 12th - Reading
  • Keep reviewing skills we've done in IXL - place value, rounding, comparing numbers, estimating sums and differences, addition and subtraction fact families.
  • Remember that Fridays are spirit days at CAES, so students can wear our school colors - red/black/white.
